Illustrations Exhibitions

The Finnish Institute for Children’s Literature has a collection of 4500 original illustrations of Finnish illustrators. Of the 4500 illustrations in the Finnish Institute for Children’s Literature there are 105 originals framed for the exhibitions of illustrations that can be borrowed. From the list below you are able to review our illustrations exhibitions that can be borrowed.

Maija-Kaarina Nenonen: Sika Sippurahäntä ja Pässi Päkäpää

The exhibition rent: 250 €/month

Maija-Kaarina Nenonen (1917-1996) is one of the pioneers of Finnish art of children literature. Her career as an illustrator situated mostly in the 1940s, which is often the reason why she remained in the shadow of the contemporary illustrators with longer careers. The Finnish Institute for Children’s Literature received in 2014 from the heirs of Nenonen a donation of 64 illustrations of originals from the artist’s children’s books. A collection of these originals is included in an exhibition introducing Nenonen’s illustrations from a WSOY kultainen kirja (golden books) series.

Kristiina Louhi: Tyttö ja naakkapuu

The exhibition rent: 200 €/month

The exhibition includes 12 Kristiina Louhi’s hard pastel works with autumnal and wintery themes from the Riitta Jalonen’s  authored trilogy Tyttö ja Naakkapuu. In the exhibition there are five originals of illutrations from the book Tyttö ja Naakkapuu (Tammi publishers 2005), three from the book Minä, äiti ja tunturihärkki (Tammi publishers 2005) and four from the book Revontulilumi (Tammi Publishers 2006).

 12 illustrations with a green wooden frame. The size of each framed is 51 x 62 cm.

Riitta Uusitalo: Armi ja pingviinin päiväkoti

The exhibition rent: 150 €/month

The exhibition consists of 12 originals of illustrations from the Riitta Uusitalo’s book Armi ja pingviinin päiväkoti (Tammi publishers 2004). Armi is a tiny hare girl. In the story Armi doesn’t go to a communal day care center, instead she stays at home caught with a cold helping Pepi the penguin in Pepi’s day care center.

Technical information:
12 paintings with white waxed wooden frames. The sizes of the works: 4 illustration 33 x 40,5 cm each and 8 illustrations 44,5 x 55 cm each.

Sari Airola: Pöökö ja Mysteerin Kesävieraat

 The exhibition rent: 150 €/month

Sari Airola (1967-) is graduated as a Master of Arts. in addition to illustrating she works as a teacher. The exhibition includes illustrations painted with acrylic paint from the book by Riitta Heikkinen named Pöökö ja Mysteerin kesävieraat (WSOY 2004). The book is about the house of Mysteeri where Pekka Pensastukka ja Mustanalle decide to take summer guests.

Nine paintings with silvery changeable aluminium frames. The sizes of the works: 2 illustrations sized 44,5 x 55,5 cm and 7 illustrations 44,5 x 82,5 cm each.

Markus Majaluoma’s and Hannu Taina’s Illustrations

 The exhibition rent: 200 €/month

Markus Majaluoma (1961) is graduated as a teacher of fine arts. In addition to illustrations he has also made comics. The exhibition includes his water colour and drawing pen illustrations from Olavi ja Aapo-books (Tammi Publishers 1996 and 1998) and from Sinikka and Tiina Nopola’s book Heinähattu ja Vilttitassu ja tanssiva konstaapeli (Tammi Publishers 2003). (Hayflower, Quiltshoe and the Dancing Constable ).

Hannu Taina (1941-) is an artist and a graphic who has illustrated children’s books since 1970’s.He has received recognition for his illustrations in Finland and abroad. For example his illustrations from a Riitta Siekkinen’s book Herra Kuningas (Mister King) won the Grand Prix prize in Biennial of Illustrations Bratislava (BIB 1987) Hannu Taina has also received the Rudolf Koivu prize and the Finnish State prize .The exhibition includes Taina’s water colour and drawing pen illustrations from Riitta Siekkinen’s book Utelias Fauni  (Otava Publishing Company 1989, The curious faun) and from Elina Karjalainen’s Uppo Nalle-books (WSOY 1982, 1986 and 1987).

Twelve illustrations with silvery changeable aluminium frames. The sizes of the works: 1 illustration sized 64 x 53,5 cm (wooden frame), 1 illustration 61 x 51 cm and 10 illustrations 41 x 51 cm each.

Maija Karma: Vattumato

The exhibition rent: 150 €/month

Maija Karma (1914-1999) is graduated as an art teacher, however she never worked in that profession. Karma’s production is extensive covering paper illustrations, the art of book covers and children’s books illustrations. The exhibition includes ten framed pictures that depict the atmosphere of bygone childhood summers from the Zachris Topelius’ story Vattumato (Otava Publishing Company 1984).

Technical information:
The sizes of the works: 6 illustrations sized: 60 x 80,5 cm, 2 65,5 x 50,5 cm and 2 55,5 x 80,5 cm.

Children and animals in Maija Karma’s illustrations and sketches

The exhibition rent: 200 €/month

The exhibition consists of Maija Karma’s illustrations and sketches from well-known Finnish children books. There are 15 different entities that form 18 works. There are illustrations as water colour works from example from the following books: Zachris Topelius’ Vattumato ja Adalmiinan helmi, Marjatta Kurennniemi’s Onneli ja Anneli, Lea Pennanen’s Piilomaan pikku aasi and Aura Koivisto’s Kurttunaamainen Leo.

Camilla Mickwitz: Jason

The exhibition rent: 150 €/month

In the exhibition there are originals of illustrations from Camilla Mickwitz’ Jason-books from the 1970s. Black- and curly-haired Jason is a little boy who lives with his mother Kaarina.

Camilla Mickwitz: Emilia

 The exhibition rent: 150 €/month

Emilia is sitting in an armchair with his father Oskar. They tell the stories to each other. The exhibition includes originals of illustrations from Camilla Mickwitz ‘ Emilia books published in the 1980s.

Camilla Mickwitz: Mimosa

 The exhibition rent: 150 €/month

Mimosa is a little witch that turns right the matters of the Kindergarden , Kyöpelinvuori and Taikurinlaakso with her magic. In the exhibition there are originals of illustrations from the Mimosa books published in the 1980s.

Camilla Mickwitz: Pieni enkeli

 Pieni enkeli is a Christmas ornament for the first time in her life and can’t find her place amongst other ornaments. The exhibition includes originals of illustrations with a feel of Christmas from the book Pieni Enkeli (W+W 1987).

Technical information:
17 framed illustrations of which 12 illustrations sized 66 x 51 cm and 5 illustrations sized 46 x 36 cm. In addition to the exhibition package a Pieni Enkeli video is included.

The loan period is for one month. The Finnish Institute for Children’s Literature is liable for the insurance costs of the exhibition. The orderer is liable for the freight costs to the order destination and back to the Institute.
